Jose and Susan Receive the “Saint Augustine Medal of Service” Award (José y Susan reciben el premio “La Medalla de Servicio de San Agustín”)

Jose and Susan Feliciano have been awarded the “Saint Augustine Medal of Service,” an honor recognizing the extraordinary volunteer contributions of lay women and men throughout Fairfield County, in the Diocese of Bridgeport, Connecticut.

The “Saint Augustine Medal of Service” Diocesan Award is presented to an individual or couple in each of the 87 parishes in Fairfield County, as well as four areas of Catholic Charities. Recipients have demonstrated extraordinary service in parish ministry, parish administration, or in some significant volunteer role.

Jose Feliciano serves his parish, The Church of the Assumption in Westport, CT., as a lector; he frequently sings and/or plays his guitar during the Mass and volunteers his time and talents in fundraising events. Susan Feliciano is a Eucharistic Minister; serves on the Board of Religious Education and has been a catechist for over 12 years, preparing second graders to receive the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.

“It is time that we recognize the ‘unsung heroes’ in our midst, the men and women who unselfishly give of their time and talents to build up our parish communities,” Bishop Lori says. “Their faithful assistance may go unrecognized in their parish, but is well-known to their priests. At every level, lay volunteers are essential in advancing the Kingdom of God in our world, and they encourage us in our priestly service.”

“I think it’s really nice and is very special to me…” says Jose while Susan says she feels “…a bit awkward only because there are so many good and generous people…” and they thank them all for their effort in doing God’s work.

El Premio Diocesano “Medalla de Servicio de San Agustín” se concede a una persona o una pareja en cada una de las 87 parroquias del condado de Fairfield, así como en cuatro áreas de Caridades Católicas. Los destinatarios han demostrado un servicio extraordinario en el ministerio parroquial, la administración de la parroquia, o en algún papel importante de voluntariado.

José Feliciano sirve a su parroquia, la Iglesia de la Asunción en Westport, CT., como lector; a menudo canta o toca su guitarra en la misa y obsequia su tiempo y talentos en eventos para recaudar fondos. Susan Feliciano es una Ministra de la Eucaristía, miembro de la Junta de Educación Religiosa y ha sido catequista desde hace más de 12 años, preparando estudiantes de segundo grado para recibir los Sacramentos de la Primera Confesión y Primera Comunión.
“Es hora de que reconozcamos los ‘héroes anónimos’ en medio de nosotros, los hombres y mujeres que desinteresadamente brindan su tiempo y talentos para fortalecer nuestras comunidades parroquiales”, dice Monseñor Lori. “Sus fieles contribuciones pueden pasar inadvertidas en su parroquia, pero es bien conocida por sus sacerdotes. En cada nivel, los voluntarios laicos son esenciales en la promoción del Reino de Dios en nuestro mundo, y nos animan en nuestro servicio sacerdotal”.
“Creo que es muy bueno y es muy especial para mí…”, dice José mientras Susan dice que ella se siente “… sólo un poco incómoda porque hay tanta gente buena y generosa…” y ellos les dan las gracias a todos por su esfuerzo en hacer la obra de Dios.
